Convert WebP to PNG on Windows
Three ways to convert a WebP file to PNG on Windows 10 or 11 — using built-in apps you already have, or a browser tool if those don't work.
Method 1 — Browser tool (quickest, always works)
This works on any version of Windows, any browser, without installing anything extra. Drop your WebP file into the converter below, click Convert, and download the PNG. The conversion runs locally — nothing leaves your computer.
Method 2 — Paint (built-in to Windows)
If Paint can't open the WebP file, install the free WebP Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. After that, Paint can open WebP files. On Windows 11, WebP support is built in — no extra install needed.
Method 3 — Photos app
What doesn't work: renaming the extension
Changing photo.webp to photo.png in File Explorer does not convert the file. The image data is still encoded as WebP. Most apps will fail to open it or show an error. You need to actually convert the file using one of the methods above.
Frequently asked questions
Can Windows 10 open WebP files natively?
Windows 10 added native WebP support through the WebP Image Extensions package, which is available for free from the Microsoft Store. Once installed, Photos, Paint, and File Explorer can all open WebP files. On Windows 11, WebP support is built in from the start.
How do I convert WebP to PNG using Paint on Windows?
Open Paint (search for it in the Start menu). Go to File → Open and select your WebP file. Then go to File → Save As and choose PNG Picture. Paint will save a new PNG file. The original WebP is unchanged.
How do I convert WebP to PNG in the Photos app on Windows?
Open the WebP image in the Photos app. Click the three-dot menu (or the Edit & Create button at the top). Choose Save a copy. In the save dialog, change the file type to PNG. This creates a new PNG without replacing the original WebP.
Can I batch convert multiple WebP files to PNG on Windows?
Windows doesn't have a built-in batch converter for image formats. For one or two files, Paint or Photos is fine. For bulk conversions, a browser-based tool handles one file at a time — repeat as needed. For large batches, tools like IrfanView (free, Windows-only) support batch conversion.
Why does Paint say it can't open my WebP file?
Older versions of Paint on Windows 10 may not support WebP if the WebP Image Extensions package isn't installed. To fix this: open the Microsoft Store, search for 'WebP Image Extensions', and install it for free. After that, Paint and other Windows apps can open WebP files. On Windows 11, this is already included.
Is there a right-click option to convert WebP to PNG on Windows?
Not natively. Windows doesn't add a right-click 'Convert to PNG' option by default. You can right-click and choose Open with → Paint, then save as PNG from there. Some third-party apps (like IrfanView) add conversion options to the right-click context menu when installed.
