Instagram Character Limits
Every Instagram field has a character limit. Here are the exact numbers for captions, bios, usernames, comments and more — so you know exactly what you're working with before you hit publish.
| Field | Limit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Caption | 2,200 | First ~125 visible in feed |
| Bio | 150 | Visible on profile |
| Username | 30 | Letters, numbers, _ and . only |
| Comment | 2,200 | Same as caption |
| Hashtags per post | 30 | Caption + first comment combined |
| Story poll option | 70 | Per answer option |
| DM message | 1,000 | Per message |
The 2,200 character caption limit — what it means in practice
Instagram allows 2,200 characters in captions, but only the first ~125 are visible in the feed before a “more” link appears. This means your opening sentence carries most of the weight for whether someone engages with your post. The full 2,200 characters is rarely needed — most effective captions are under 300 characters.
If you're writing longer captions (for storytelling or educational content), structure them with a strong hook in the first 125 characters to encourage people to tap “more”.
The 150-character bio — every character counts
150 characters sounds like plenty until you try to pack in your job title, value proposition, call to action and a mention of your link-in-bio. Most effective Instagram bios use line breaks (you can add these in the app but not always via desktop) to create visual structure within the 150-character limit.
Emoji are popular in bios to replace words and save characters — a 🎨 takes 1–2 characters but communicates “artist” instantly.
Hashtags: quality over quantity
Instagram allows 30 hashtags per post across your caption and first comment. Despite this, Instagram itself has suggested that 3–5 highly relevant hashtags typically outperform posts using all 30. A mix of large hashtags (1M+ posts), medium (100K–1M), and niche (<100K) tends to give the best reach.

What is the Instagram caption character limit?
Instagram captions have a maximum of 2,200 characters. However, captions are truncated in the feed after approximately 125 characters, showing a 'more' link. Only the first 125 characters are visible without clicking — so your opening line matters most for engagement.
What is the Instagram bio character limit?
Instagram bios are limited to 150 characters. This includes spaces, punctuation and emoji. Emoji typically count as 1 or 2 characters depending on the type. You have 150 characters to describe yourself, include a call to action and mention your link.
What is the Instagram username character limit?
Instagram usernames can be between 1 and 30 characters. They can contain letters, numbers, underscores and periods. No spaces or special characters are allowed. Usernames must be unique across Instagram.
What is the Instagram comment character limit?
Instagram comments are limited to 2,200 characters, the same as captions. You can also include up to 30 hashtags in a comment. Some users move hashtags to the first comment on their post to keep the caption clean.
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post — in the caption or in the first comment combined. Each hashtag counts toward the 2,200 character limit for captions. Instagram has stated that using 3–5 highly relevant hashtags tends to perform better than using all 30.
Does Instagram count emoji as characters?
Yes. On Instagram, most standard emoji count as 1 character. Some complex emoji (like those with skin tone modifiers) can count as 2 characters. Emoji also take up space in captions, bios and usernames. Use the character counter to get an accurate count including emoji.
